Chevalier Group Set up Scholarship to Nurture Young Professionals

Taking roots in Hong Kong for nearly 50 years, Chevalier Group is committed to corporate social responsibility with a strong belief of “giving back to society”. It extensively supports a wide range of charitable causes, with particular emphasis in the development of education. The Group believes that young people are the future leaders of our society and education plays an important role in cultivating young talents. Over the years, the Group made donations to various universities and educational institutions in Hong Kong and Mainland China. This year, it further supported the Vocational Training Council (VTC) by establishing “Chevalier Group Scholarship” for VTC engineering students with outstanding academic performance, in order to nurture young professionals for the Hong Kong construction industry.

With the launch of a number of infrastructure projects in Hong Kong, there is a keen demand for engineering talents who have professional expertise and technical skills. To train new blood for the industry, Chevalier Group donated a total sum of HK$2,000,000 to VTC to set up the Scholarship for awarding the higher diploma and diploma students in the Engineering Discipline who have achieved outstanding academic performance. The Scholarship covered the programmes including Civil Engineering, Building Studies, Surveying, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic & Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Building Services Engineering and Electrical Engineering. It is expected that a total of 80 students in the Engineering Discipline will be awarded in the two academic years.

40 awardees were granted a scholarship ranging from HK$10,000 to HK$40,000 in the first academic year. The “Chevalier Group Scholarship Presentation Ceremony” was held at the VTC Halls of Residence (Tsing Yi) on 12 July 2019. On behalf of the Group, Mr H S Kuok, Chairman & Managing Director, and a number of colleagues from Chevalier (HK) and Chevalier (Construction) attended the presentation ceremony to congratulate the awardees.

Mr Kuok delivered the opening remarks and stated that Construction and Engineering, one of the core businesses of the Chevalier Group, is closely related to the daily life of the general public. He recognised the awardees’ efforts spent in the past year, and encouraged them to apply the professional knowledge they have learnt with a view to enhancing living environment and the quality of life of the whole community.

Mr Kuok then presented the certificates to 40 awardees in recognition of their efforts and achievement. Three of them were invited to share their experience on the stage and Mr Tsang Chi Fung who is studying Higher Diploma in Building Services Engineering, thanked the Chevalier Group for its generous donation. “Chevalier Group Scholarship”, the first-ever scholarship he received, had a significant meaning to him. He hopes to become a registered engineer and apply his knowledge to improve the living environment of the old districts and promote green building.

In addition to setting up the Scholarship, Chevalier Group also regularly offers various internship opportunities for VTC engineering students to work in the related sectors, such as electrical and mechanical engineering, lift maintenance and environmental engineering, enabling them to acquire practical skills for future employment.
